Launch of the "Board of Peace'".

On Thursday, January 22, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump formally launched the Board of Peace during a charter-signing ceremony at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Initially proposed as a mechanism to oversee the reconstruction of Gaza following the 2023–2025 conflict, the board has transitioned into a permanent international body intended to resolve global conflicts.

Key Features and Mandate
  • Chairman for Life: The board's charter names Donald Trump as its founding chairman for life. He holds exclusive authority to invite members and nominate his successor.
  • Global Remit: While it originated from a UN-backed plan for Gaza (UN Security Council Resolution 2803), the final 11-page charter reportedly does not mention Gaza once. Instead, it seeks to promote stability and governance in any area "threatened by conflict".
  • UN Rivalry: Although Trump stated the board would "work in conjunction with the United Nations," the charter describes a need to depart from "institutions that have too often failed," leading many observers to view it as a potential rival to the UN Security Council.

Membership and $1 Billion Fee
  • Signatories: Approximately 35 countries have committed to joining the board out of over 50 invited. Notable members include Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, Indonesia, Qatar, the UAE, Argentina, and Hungary.
  • The "$1 Billion Price Tag": Membership is generally limited to three-year terms. To secure a permanent seat, countries must contribute $1 billion in cash during the board's first year.
  • Western Refusals: Most major European allies—including the UK, France, Norway, and Sweden—have declined to join, citing concerns over the board's broad mandate and the inclusion of authoritarian leaders.

Leadership Structure
The board is supported by an Executive Board that includes:
  • Marco Rubio (U.S. Secretary of State)
  • Steve Witkoff (U.S. Special Envoy)
  • Jared Kushner (Trump's son-in-law)
  • Tony Blair (Former UK Prime Minister)
  • Ajay Banga (World Bank President)
  • Nickolay Mladenov (High Representative for Gaza)
